What is PEP?

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) involves treatment with HIV inhibitors. If you are certain that you have had contact with bodily fluid infected with HIV (e.g. through unprotected sex or injury involving a used needle) and if the chance of exposure to HIV is extremely high, then medications are available that may reduce the risk of infection.

PEP is a course of treatment that lasts 4 weeks and reduces the chance of the virus infiltrating the body. The earlier you begin PEP, the greater the chance of remaining HIV-negative. The treatment should preferably be commenced as soon as possible after the risk has been posed, but always within 72 hours.

How can I get PEP?

  • In Amsterdam and the surrounding areas (Amstelveen, Aalsmeer, Diemen, Uithoorn and Ouder-Amstel): We collaborate with the Department of Infectious Diseases of the public Health Service and all hospitals within Amsterdam.
  • Outside Amsterdam: If you live outside the working area of the Public Health Service Amsterdam, then you can visit the Public Health Service in your region. Visit ggd.nl for addresses and telephone numbers.

Please note: PEP is only reimbursed with a Dutch health insurance policy. If you have a foreign (health) insurance policy, you will need to pay for the entire PEP treatment in cash at the pharmacy and claim for the PEP afterwards. Check the terms and conditions of your insurance in this regard. The cost of this will be approximately €1000. Take your deductible into account when determining the possible cost to you. Always take your insurance details and identification with you when you visit the pharmacy.
