PrEP is a medicine that prevents you from getting HIV. You can take it daily or before and after sex. GGD Amsterdam Public Health Service provides PrEP care to people at increased risk of HIV.
It has been scientifically proven that PrEP is safe and effective. However, you do have to use it as prescribed. PrEP does not protect against other STIs.
Increased risk of HIV
You are at increased risk of HIV if:
- you have sex without a condom with someone who may be HIV infected
- you have recently had syphilis or another STI

The GGD Amsterdam Public Health Service PrEP programme is full. The waiting time is more than a year, which is why you cannot sign up for the programme.
PrEP via your GP
You can get PrEP through your GP. We can do your three- to six-monthly check-ups for HIV and STIs, or you can go to a location of the Man tot Man Test lab

Using PrEP
It is important that you use PrEP as prescribed. Only then will you be optimally protected against an HIV infection. PrEP can be used in two ways: daily or before and after sex. Choose the intake schedule that suits you best.

Difference between PrEP and PEP
PrEP and PEP are both HIV inhibitors that can prevent HIV. However, there is a major difference between the two:
- PEP is a treatment that should be taken as soon as possible after possible exposure to HIV, such as after unprotected sex.
- PrEP, on the other hand, is taken in advance to prevent infection.
