Question & answer

Questions regarding tests

Can I have a pregnancy test carried out by you?
If you are unsure as to whether you might be pregnant, you can make a Sense appointment with us (free for young people under the age of 25). A pregnancy test may then be carried out.

Do you also carry out a smear for cervical cancer?
No, we don't do that. But your GP and other places will offer these. You can also contact the Stichting Bevolkingsonderzoek Midden-West if you have any questions or requests related to population screening for cervical cancer. Client information line: +31 (0)20 409 6699 (Mon to Fri 09:00-12:00 inclusive, local rate). Email:

I only want to undergo a HIV test. Can I have this carried out here?
A HIV test is offered in combination with a test for other STIs. So no, it is not possible to have just a HIV test carried out.

Can I come to the STI Outpatient Clinic for a rapid HIV test?
A HIV test is a possible component of an extensive test for STIs in the Outpatient Clinic. If the client has specific symptoms or has received a warning from someone else that he/she may be infected, the rapid HIV test is used. The results of the rapid HIV test are known within 45 to 60 minutes. If there is no specific reason to perform the rapid test, the standard HIV test will be performed and the client can view the results on the internet after three to ten days.

I need to undergo a HIV test for an insurance policy or visa, can I have this carried out at the Public Health Service?
No. We do not issue HIV results for these purposes.

Can I receive the results in printed form for my insurance company or visa?
No, that is not possible. You will need to visit your doctor if you would like your results in this form.

Questions regarding the STI examination

Is the examination painful?
No, the examination will not be painful, but it could be sensitive. It is important to remain as relaxed as possible during the examination. If you are too tense, the examination may seem painful.

Do I need to fast (have an empty stomach) for the examination?
No, it is not necessary to have an empty stomach for these tests. We do, however, recommend that you eat something before the examination so that you do not feel faint during the blood tests.

Can I be examined if I am on my period?
Yes you can. The bacteria (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas) can be traced at all times. It may be the case that the examination is a little more sensitive. However, if your specific symptom is related to discharge, we cannot assess this very well during your period. If this is the case, we recommend that you attend once your period has finished.

I had unprotected sex yesterday, can I be tested now?
It is too early to be tested now. You must wait a minimum of one week to 10 days before you can be tested. However, if you experience symptoms, you must contact us before this. If you think you may have been infected with HIV, please refer to the information regarding PEP.

I am currently taking medication, can I still undergo an examination?
If you are currently taking an antibiotic, it is better if you have an appointment one week after ending the course of antibiotics. It may be the case that we cannot get completely reliable test results. However, if you are experiencing symptoms you must, of course, come to see us so that we can see whether you can be examined.

Questions regarding the consultation hours

How much does treatment cost?
You do not need to pay for the test or any treatments. Insurance is not required either. The only cost to you will be time and patience.

Will I need to wait a long time before I can be seen?
We try our best to treat everyone within 30 minutes of their appointment time. You must also bear in mind that the examination can take between 10 and 50 minutes and that any provisional results will be given 45 minutes after the examination. All in all, a visit to the STI Outpatient Clinic can take around 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Can I be tested anywhere else?
Yes you can. You can be tested by your GP (family doctor).

Can I visit you if I have questions regarding sex?
You can visit us Mondays to Fridays if you have any questions relating to sexual health. E.g.: I have pain when having sex, I am worried I may be pregnant, what is the best form of contraception, I have forgotten to take the pill, what should I do now? I orgasm too quickly, is there anything I can do to prevent this?

You can make an appointment online for a Sense consultation (this is free of charge for anyone under the age of 25). Click on the appointment button on the right-hand side of this page to book an appointment.
