STI test at GGD Amsterdam Public Health Service

Lijst

Is there a chance you could have contracted an STI? Then you should get tested. Even if you have no symptoms. If an STI goes untreated, you may get health issues or become ill later on.

You can get an STI and pass it on by having sex. Even if neither you nor your sexual partner are experiencing symptoms. So be alert and get tested for STIs if you think you could have one.

When should you get tested for STIs?

  • If you have symptoms or a burning sensation when you pee
  • If you had sex without using a condom, or if the condom broke
  • If you had sex with someone who has an STI
  • If you have a long-term partner and wish to stop using condoms
GGD Amsterdam has limited availability. Therefore only young people and people who are at greater risk of contracting an STI can make an appointment. You also can do an STI test at the GP's office or at home.

STI test at your GP’s or at home

Are you unable to make an appointment with the Municipal Health Service? Then you have the following options:

  • Schedule an appointment with your GP. GP appointments are covered by basic health insurance. An STI test might be deducted from your excess.
  • Take an STI self-test. Check the Soa Aids Nederland website for information on reliable STI self-tests
  • There are private clinics where you can get tested for STIs anonymously.

Before the appointment

At least a week should have passed between having sex and getting tested for STIs. Do you have a long-term partner? Then you should both make an appointment to get tested.

Sometimes it is a good idea to come sooner:

  • after sexual abuse
  • if you are having symptoms or have been warned by someone
  • if you had sex in the last 72 hours and you think you may be at risk of contracting HIV
